Kenji Miyazawa’s
Magic Lantern Theatre
“The Restaurant of Many Orders”

This play offers a mysterious parade of marionettes and multicolored magic lantern pictures. It is set at the Mountain Cat restaurant, where Miyazawa’s scary and delightful mysteries explode in a phantasmagoria of Youkiza theatrics.

Part One begins with the episode “Kenji’s Trunk”, which portrays Kenji’s character, and then leads on to “Cypress and Red Poppy” and the “Night of the Festival”. Part Two comprises Kenji’s well-known work “The Restaurant of Many Orders”. Enjoy Youkiza’s phantasmal world with popular artist Takayuki Terakado’s several hundred richly colored paintings flying across the theatre screen.

  • Edo Marionette Theatre Youkiza

    (National Important Intangible Folk-Cultural Property / Tokyo Metropolitan Area Intangible Cultural Property) Since Youkiza was founded by Youki Magosaburo I in 1635, its history has spanned some three and a half centuries. The current leader is Magosaburo XII. Today’s Youkiza continues to be active, preserving traditional marionette repertory and skills, as well as performing new plays and magic lantern shows, touring abroad, and holding international projects. Youkiza can boast of having performed in many areas across the globe.

  • Edo Magic Lantern Performances

    Another traditional art that Youkiza celebrates is magic lantern performance, which has a 200 year history. This art applies the media skills invented in Europe during the mid 17th century. Glass slides are inserted into a box-shaped projector and pictures are projected onto a screen. A number of mobile projectors are deployed together to create complex scenes.
